About this scheme
SEAI administers electric vehicle grants on behalf of Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI) to make switching to an EV more affordable. Excluding the private passenger car (M1) grant, this scheme supports the purchase of new battery electric light commercial vehicles and electric motorcycles/mopeds, available to businesses, public entities and private individuals. Grants are deducted directly from the purchase price by a participating dealer, who applies on the buyer's behalf, so there's no separate claims process for the buyer. Support ranges from €500 for a moped up, €3,800 for a small van, or €7,600 for a large panel van, with the amount depending on vehicle category and price. The scheme applies to new vehicles only and is classed as de minimis state aid, subject to a 3-year €300,000 ceiling. Additional incentives such as VRT relief, reduced motor tax, and Benefit-in-Kind relief may also apply to electric vehicles bought this way.
Who can apply
- Vehicle must be new; grants cannot be claimed on second-hand/used EVs
- N1S small van (BEV): grant of up to €3,800; list price between €15,000 and €60,000 to qualify
- N1L large panel van (BEV): technically permissible maximum mass of exactly 3500kg and a price of €90,000 or less (excluding grants/rebates/incentives)
- L1e-B moped and L3e motorcycle: full price of less than €60,000 to qualify; open to both private and commercial buyers
- Available to businesses, public sector entities and private individuals purchasing qualifying commercial vans or electric motorcycles/mopeds
- Excludes M1 passenger car grants, which are restricted to private (non-commercial) buyers only
- Purchase must be made through a dealer registered for the EV grant scheme, who applies for the grant on the buyer's behalf
- Grants are classed as de minimis state aid and are subject to a 3-year €300,000 ceiling
How to apply
- Choose a make/model of qualifying electric vehicle, using SEAI's comparison tool to help decide.
- Visit a dealer registered for the EV grant scheme to test drive the vehicle and discuss performance and specification queries.
- At purchase, the dealer applies for the grant on the buyer's behalf; the grant amount is deducted from the total price agreed for the new electric vehicle.
- It is recommended that buyers contact a number of dealers to obtain the best price for the vehicle. Grants are not available for used EVs.
