About this scheme

The Heat Pump Grant, delivered under SEAI's Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH) investment aid, helps businesses switch from fossil fuel heating to renewable heat pump technology, increasing energy efficiency, reducing heating costs, and lowering carbon footprint. SEAI offers an installation grant of up to 40% for air source, ground source and water source heat pumps, and for mechanical vapour recompression systems, with a slightly lower 35% grant available for Geothermal Heating Systems. An additional 30% grant is available for related energy efficiency measures, such as heat recovery, ventilation, or building fabric works, undertaken alongside the heat pump installation. SEAI recommends carrying out an energy audit and engaging an energy consultant or sustainability manager before applying, as they can help assess suitability and guide the SSRH application. Applications are made online via SEAI's Project Evaluation Platform (PEP), following the scheme's Terms and Conditions and grant scheme operating rules.

Who can apply

  • Applicant must be converting from a fossil fuel heating system
  • Eligible heat use: space heating or process heating
  • System must comply with eco-design standards
  • Heating system design must comply with building regulations and other relevant regulations
  • Works must be carried out by qualified designers competent to carry out the works
  • Recipients of payments must meet tax clearance requirements
  • Recommended (not stated as mandatory) to carry out an energy audit and engage an energy consultant or sustainability manager before applying

How to apply

  1. Check eligibility: the applicant must be able to show conversion from fossil fuels, eligible heat use (space heating or process), compliance with eco-design standards, a heating system design compliant with building regulations, qualified designers competent to carry out the works, and that payment recipients meet tax clearance requirements.
  2. Consult an expert: carry out an energy audit, engage an energy consultant or sustainability manager to evaluate suitability for heat pumps (or biomass/biogas), and identify the most suitable heating system for the business's needs.
  3. Ensure compliance: check compliance with the scheme's Terms and Conditions, and refer to the relevant tariff and grant scheme rules and guidelines.
  4. Start the application: refer to the application checklist and the guidance on submitting an online application via SEAI's Project Evaluation Platform (PEP), ensuring all documentation is in order.
